Puritan pastor Jeremiah Burroughs (1599-1646), also a prolific author, left a treasure trove for Christians who came after him in his writings. He is among the most-loved Puritan authors in contemporary times. In one of his books (
Gospel Conversation), first published two years after his death, his associates who saw that the book was published said this of Burroughs in their preface to the book:
He did the work of Him who sent him while it was day, because he feared, as he would often say, a night was coming upon the kingdom wherein he could not work, and so he lived long in a little time.
He lived long in a little time. Those words would not be spoken of one who contented himself with a superficial life, one who did the bare minimum they could do in the company and service of others, and then retreated into their home to while away the hours in idle pursuits. No, those are words which would describe a man who spent himself for the cause of the Gospel, pouring his life into the lives of others, and into the cause of making the name of Christ great among all those he encountered.
May I, and may you, strive to live this life in a way that is worthy of such words upon the occasion of our passing into eternity.
